Obama uses virtual commencement to slam 'folks in charge'... and Trump responds

  • Former President Barack Obama took aim at the "folks in charge" while giving a virtual commencement address.
  • The former president did not name any names, but President Donald Trump responded to the comment after being asked about it by one reporter.
  • "He was an incompetent president," Trump said of Obama.

Former President Barack Obama slammed the "folks in charge" during a virtual commencement address to college graduates over the weekend, suggesting that they don't "know what they're doing" as they handle the coronavirus pandemic. 

Obama delivered the address to graduates of America's Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

"this pandemic has fully, finally torn back the curtain on the idea that so many of the folks in charge know what they’re doing"   

"More than anything, this pandemic has fully, finally torn back the curtain on the idea that so many of the folks in charge know what they’re doing. A lot of them aren’t even pretending to be in charge," Obama said.

While Obama did not specifically name anyone, President Donald Trump was asked by one reporter Sunday about Obama's comment. 

"Look, he was an incompetent president, that's all I can say. Grossly incompetent," Trump said.

The event was streamed live on YouTube and featured several prominent Hollywood celebrities and politicians, including both Obama and former Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris, who graduated from Howard University, a historically black university in Washington, D.C. Obama addressed graduating high school seniors in a separate virtual commencement address over the weekend.
